Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How do lasers safely remove hair?

When you stop to think about the power of a laser, it may be hard to imagine that laser energy can be used to safely eliminate unwanted hair without harming your skin or the surrounding structures. But it can do that because the laser operates at a wavelength that only affects pigments in the hair follicle.

The laser travels through your skin without causing damage, and the pigments in the hair follicle absorb its energy. The laser’s energy heats and destroys the follicle, so it can’t grow hair in the future.

The team at Pueblo Vein Center effectively and permanently remove unwanted hair using the Cutera Xeo platform. This advanced and versatile system has multiple laser options. As a result, the team can customize your treatment based on your skin type and the area of your body being treated.

Why do I need multiple laser hair removal treatments?

Lasers can only destroy a hair follicle when it’s growing hair. Unfortunately, suspectable follicles aren’t always in a growth stage. They go through three stages — growth, transitional, and dormant — constantly cycling through each one. When a follicle goes dormant, the existing hair falls out and the follicle stops growing hair until it comes out of rest; then it starts the growth cycle again.

At any one time, about 10-15% of your hair follicles are in this resting phase, so they won’t be affected by the laser. To further complicate matters, each hair follicle independently follows its own time schedule. That means you’ll need several treatments over time before all your follicles are treated while they’re growing hair.

The number of treatments you may need depends on the area being treated. The team at Pueblo Vein Center can give you a better idea about your treatment schedule after your consultation.

What should I expect during and after laser hair removal?

The length of each session depends on the size of the area where you want hair removed. It can range from a few minutes for an upper lip to 30-60 minutes for a larger area like your back.

Most patients find it’s easy to tolerate laser hair removal because the Xeo is equipped with a cooling tip that keeps their skin comfortable. After your treatment, your skin may be slightly red, but you can return to your normal daily activities.
